Thank you for joining ATW 2025!

ASIA Tsunami Workshop 2025 (SCSTW-15)
The conference will be held in Tokyo on November 20 and 21, with a field excursion in Sendai on Saturday, November 22.
Greetings
We are pleased to announce that the Asia Tsunami Workshop (ATW) will be held on November 20–21, 2025, at the Takeda Hall of the University of Tokyo. This workshop is a spin-off from the South China Sea Tsunami Workshop (SCSTW), serving as the 15th meeting in the SCSTW series. SCSTW is a long-standing annual gathering that has brought together tsunami researchers from across the South China Sea region. The original workshop has fostered a unique environment where early-career graduate students present their developing work, mid-career scientists share cutting-edge research, and senior experts deliver comprehensive lectures. True to this inclusive spirit, this year, we broaden our focus beyond the South China Sea to encompass tsunami-related research throughout Asia, marking a new chapter by hosting the event in Tokyo.
The Asia Tsunami Workshop warmly welcomes presentations addressing tsunamis generated by a wide range of mechanisms, including earthquakes, landslides, volcanic activity, and atmospheric pressure disturbances. Topics of interest span tsunami generation processes, propagation dynamics, run-up behavior, and damage assessment. In addition, we invite contributions on tsunami disaster mitigation strategies, such as hazard assessments, warning systems, coastal protection infrastructure, rapid evacuation planning, and community-based disaster preparedness and awareness efforts. The workshop will offer oral and poster sessions, promoting vibrant academic exchange across generations and geographic boundaries.
Of particular significance this year is the M8.8 earthquake off Kamchatka in July 2025, which generated a large tsunami recorded by precise instruments across the Pacific basin. The analysis of this event is expected to yield valuable insights, and we hope this workshop will serve as a timely platform for sharing initial findings and fostering collaborative discussion.
The workshop will be followed by a field excursion on Saturday, November 22, offering participants the opportunity to visit areas in Sendai that are still in the process of recovery from the devastating 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake and Tsunami.
We look forward to welcoming you to Tokyo for what promises to be an engaging and impactful gathering.
